If you drive a Holden VF Commodore (built between June 2013 and October 2017), replacing the battery is easier than you might think — and you don’t need to call a mechanic. This guide will walk you through the full battery replacement process step-by-step.

Whether you’re a DIY enthusiast or just looking to save money, here’s everything you need to know.

🛠️ Tools & Equipment You’ll Need:

  • 10mm & 13mm socket or spanner

  • Memory saver (optional, for keeping settings)

  • Wire brush or battery terminal cleaner

  • A new compatible battery

  • Gloves and safety glasses for protection

⚠️ Safety First

  • Park the vehicle on a level surface

  • Turn off the ignition and remove the key

  • Engage the handbrake

  • Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself from acid and sparks

📍 Where’s the Battery in a VF Commodore?

Unlike many cars, the VF Commodore’s battery is located in the boot, under the carpet on the left-hand side. You’ll need to lift the carpet and possibly remove some plastic covers to access it.

Battery is located in the left hand side of the boot behind the quater panel trim

🔋 Step-by-Step Battery Removal

1. Open the boot and access the battery

Lift the carpet flap on the passenger side of the boot and locate the battery.

3. Disconnect the negative (–) terminal

Use your 10mm spanner to loosen the nut on the negative terminal. Carefully remove the cable and move it aside so it doesn’t touch the battery.

4. Disconnect the positive (+) terminal

Repeat the same process with the positive terminal.

5. Remove the battery hold-down bracket

Locate the bracket or clamp securing the battery. Use your spanner or socket to remove it.

There are two 13mm nuts holding the battery in place, and two 10mm nuts for the battery terminals.

5. Lift out the old battery

Be cautious — car batteries can weigh over 20kg. Lift with your knees, not your back.

🔋 Installing the New Battery

Installing is the same as the removal process, but in reverse. Below are some additional tips.

1. Clean the terminal clamps

Use a wire brush to remove corrosion or residue inside the clamps.

2. Place the new battery into position

Make sure the terminals are facing the correct way (positive to positive, negative to negative).

3. Secure the battery with the hold-down bracket

Tighten it to keep the battery firmly in place.

4. Reconnect the positive (+) terminal first

Slide the clamp on and tighten it securely.

5. Reconnect the negative (–) terminal last

Repeat the same process, making sure everything is tight and stable.

6. Replace the carpet and trim

Neatly return the boot back to its original setup.

  • Start the engine — it should crank easily and run smoothly

  • Reset the time, radio, and any other electrical settings
