How much does wheel balancing cost?

Balancing the tyres and wheels on your car isn't an expensive service - but it can save you lots of money on new tyres!

On average, it will cost between $30 - $100 to have all four (possibly five including your spare) tyres balanced.

Sometimes, workshops will suggest having wheel alignment carried out at the same time - and possibly even tyre rotations too.

What is wheel balancing?

When your wheels are balanced, a technician will make sure the weight distribution around the full wheel is perfect. 

You might wonder why this is necessary - but it really comes down to how wheels and tyres are made. Unless you're buying tyres that have been specially made for a Formula 1 car, it's extremely difficult to make sure the density of the rubber is exactly the same through ever bit of the tyre. This means the wheel will be slightly heavier in some spots.

The weights we're discussing here are exceptionally small - sometimes even 5 - 15 grams. However, when this weight is rolling at speed, it can cause imbalances that can cause the car to vibrate - which can often be felt through the steering wheel.

What's more, tyre wear is improved when wheels are balanced correctly. In the long-run, make sure your tyres are balanced correctly can save a lot on replacements.

What are some symptoms of wheels that need balancing?

These are symptoms and situations to look out for when it comes to making sure your wheels and tyres are correctly balanced:

Vibrations coming from Wheels.

If you're feeling vibrations in your car (especially through the steering wheel) it could be an indication that one or more wheel is out of balance.

You've had your tyres rotated

If you've had tyres rotated, they'll have been mounted on to new wheels. This is a time to make sure the balance is right.

You drive rough roads 

If you drive on rough roads a lot, you may end up with slight knocks and scratches on your wheels and tyres. This can lead to imbalances.

You're repaired a flat

If you've repaired a flat, you'll have added material to your tyre (even if it's just a repair canister). As such, the balance of wheel and tyre will need putting right. 

You've had new tyre(s) fitted

New tyres will almost always be balanced when a vehicle workshop carries out the work. However, if you've fitted tyres yourself or they're not balanced, you should have the work done.

A weight has come off the rim

 Notice small weights on the inside of the rim or next to the tyre bead? They're balancing weights - and if you lose one, you'll need to have it replaced.

Uneven wear  

Tyre tread not wearing evenly? It could be down to an imbalance.

How is a wheel balanced?

Balancing is usually carried out by an experienced technician who will following these steps:

1. The tyre and wheel is removed from the vehicle and mounted on a balancing machine
2. The machine spins the wheel and monitors for vibration coming from the wheel
3. This information is used to work out where weights should be applied and how much weight is needed
4. The wheel will usually be double checked (to make sure no wheel/tyre heavy spots are lined up) then weights applied
5. The wheel is remounted on the vehicle
